August 29 at #KBtribechat – Lighting Trends

A design discussion

Sponsored and Hosted by Rev-A-Shelf

Light bulb with brain inside the hands of the businessman.

Household technology is undergoing a transformation that’s changing the way we think about our daily routines. More specifically, we want to talk about the impact lighting has on our home and even health.

Today’s progressive lighting schemes aren’t about lights that go on and off; they’re about being partners in enhancing our lifestyle.

Our KBtribechat Questions:

1.)  There has been an increase in studies linking lighting and health. Have you seen an increase in demand for human-centric lighting? This is lighting that can benefit the biological, emotional, health or well-being of people.

2.)  What type of smart lighting technology (Bluetooth Smart, Z-Wave, ZigBee) are your customers asking for and how comfortable are you in explaining their various options?

3.) The retro look keeps nudging its way into lighting design. What have you been seeing lately? Share pictures!

4.) Integrated LED lighting in, above and below cabinets and drawers is one of the hottest kitchen trends. Are you seeing new or innovative places homeowners are installing lighting?

5.) Bigger is better. Homeowners are falling in love with bigger fixtures to create a “WOW” factor over an island, dining table, etc. Are you adding these to your designs?

6.) With the demand for LED growing, how many of you are comfortable with and actively specify cabinet lighting vs. leaving it to the electrician?

7.) What areas in kitchen and bath do you feel there is a lack of lighting options?

8.) Are you loving the trend of backlighting countertops? Tell us what you think, and share pictures of some of your favorites!

K+B Design with LED

Hosted by lighting designer James Bedell

Host James Bedell

Host James Bedell

For many of us the language of light has centered around concepts like wattage. Your contractor would ask you what bulb you wanted to put in your recessed high hats and you’d say “75 watt” because you knew from years of designing kitchens that six 75 watt PAR30 bulbs would leave your kitchen nice and bright.

LED is changing all of that. We don’t talk in terms of lumens anymore. Now terms like Lumens and foot-candles have become important to getting an understanding for light levels. We never used to have to consider the color temperature of the source but LED opens up a range of possibilities for the tone of white light a fixture creates. We never used to think about what our color choices would look like under different light sources, but with LED it’s essential to consider for your design to take on the life you need.

To that end, this KBTribechat is going to be all about LED. How to understand it, how to specify it and what to look for when reviewing samples. We might use some technical terms, but don’t get scared off, we’ll be talking in plain english, answering your LED questions.

Here are Jame’s KBtribechat questions:

Q1: Have you successfully specified LED on any recent projects?
Q2: What are your biggest challenges when specifying LED?
Q3: What’s the difference between Lumens and Foot-Candles?
Q4: What color temperatures are you specifying?
Q5: How do you review samples of different LED fixtures?
